Low water pressure can be very inconvenient. Showers and sprays cannot be fully utilized, some appliances connected to the water supply may have a hard time operating optimally, and at the same time some plumbing issues may arise.

“When only one fixture has low water pressure, it’s likely that the problem can be remedied if you just focus on fixing that one fixture or the pipes serving it. But widespread water pressure issues affecting the whole house indicate different problems. If your home water pressure seems low, then the first thing to do is to narrow down the cause.”

Hometips.com also mentioned possible courses of action homeowners may take when faced with low water pressure. Initially, they said, homeowners should rule out a possible neighborhood-wide lowered water pressure by asking out neighbors, or checking out announcements from the water district. Another possible reason for low water supply, according to the website are issues with the home valves.

“There should be a water shutoff valve next to the meter—in fact, there may be one on each side of the meter as shown in the illustration at right. Be sure the valves are entirely open—turned counterclockwise as far as they will go. If you discover that a supply valve is partially closed, opening it should solve the problem.”

The Family Handyman also came up with the possible explanations as to why water pressure could be low inside a home. They also included possible solutions to these woes.

“Usually, poor water pressure is caused by clogged pipes. But if you’ve already replaced them or have a newer house with new pipes, try the obvious first. Make sure the shutoff valves near the water meter are fully open. Sounds basic, but plumbers still have to charge for a service call to simply turn a water pressure valve handle! Then check the water pressure. If your house is on city water, ask your local water department for a pressure reading. A reading of 45 to 55 psi is ideal.”
